Tour the Town - Stop 14

Around the corner on Savannah Road and Kings’s Highway is the Zwaanendael Museum. A tour of this Museum is a must to understanding the history and culture of the area.

The Zwaanendael Museum was built in 1931 by the state of Delaware in memory of the ill-fated Dutch settlement of 1631. The museum contains permanent and loaned exhibits dealing with the history of Lewes and Delaware as well as Dutch gifts and exhibits.

A stop by the Zwaanendael is a must in order to get a deeper glimpse into Lewes’s past. It’s baroque red-brick exterior, which looks like nothing else for miles around, is modeled after the town hall of Hoorn, The Netherlands.

Hours of operation are: Tuesday through Saturday 10:00a.m.-4:30 p.m.. Sunday 1:30-4:30 p.m. Closed Mondays and state holidays. Admission is free.
